Q1. Why is my photo too small to print?

Unlike film negatives, which could be enlarged greatly without significant loss in quality, digital photos cannot be increased in size without losing detail and clarity. This is because your image is made up of a certain number of points of colour - pixels!

When you try to enlarge a digital photo, these dots just get bigger and bigger, giving your printed image a 'boxy' or jagged look that's not very nice to look at.

For this reason, we check your uploaded photos to ensure that we can give you a good quality print. The smallest image we will accept for printing on canvas is 1500 x 1500 pixels, or 2.25 megapixels.

Common Problems

  • Check your digital camera's image size/quality setting
Most digital cameras can be set to take pictures at smaller sizes to save space on the memory card. Don't do this! If your camera is set to a lower resolution than it is capable of capturing, you are throwing away precious pixels that cannot be recovered!
  • E-mailed Photos
Many e-mail programs will downsize attached pictures so that they can be sent and received more quickly. If you are sending photos to someone, or if someone has sent them to you, check that the photo you have used is the original size.
  • Mobile Phone Cameras
Many mobile phones have built-in cameras. Many recent models have cameras capable of creating suitable images, but many do not. As with any digital camera, check your image size/quality setting to ensure that you are capturing all of the pixels that your camera is able to.

Q2. Do I need a PayPal account to buy from Canvas Art?

No! Although we use PayPal for secure online credit cart payments, you can still pay for your canvas via PayPal without a PayPal account.

We chose PayPal as our payment solution because they manage payments for thousands of Australian online businesses every day.

Q3. How are the canvas prints made?

Firstly we digitally print onto professional quality primed artists canvas using a HP turbojet Scitex TJ8500 U.V. digital printer. Once printed, we stretch mount the canvas onto artist-quality wooden stretcher bars using a box-mount. This produces a frame with imaged edges for that 'gallery look'.

Q4. What will the print quality be like?

Our canvas prints use the highest quality materials and the very best printer for this type of printing. Canvas is a natural product however there may be minor inconsistencies in the surface as a result. These artifacts are what you would expect from any canvas artwork. Image quality is the single biggest issue in determining the finished look. If you upload a poor image (over or under exposed, out-of-focus, etc) then your canvas will reflect this. Please remember that computer monitors always display images with more vibrancy than any printed product.

Q5. How long will my canvas last?

You can expect as long a life from your canvas print as you would from any artwork, provided you treat it well. Unlike most canvas printers, we do not print using inexpensive ink-jet printers, rather we use a high-end printer that cures its print with U.V. light. The resulting prints are extremely U.V. durable (i.e. they don’t fade readily when exposed to sunlight).

Q6. What kinds of image can I use?

We support the uploading of JPG image files only. If your artwork is in another format, you should be able to convert it to JPEG using suitable software.

All digital cameras will output JPG files. If you are unsure of the format of your image, please consult a trained professional ie: photolab printer.

Q7. What size/resolution image will I require?

When you click on a photo to order a print, we'll only recommend sizes that we think will give you a good quality result.

We'll warn you if you try to use an image that is too low resolution, or if you try to zoom-in too much when placing your photo.

Rather than talk in complex pixel-counts, we suggest minimum file sizes based on megapixels. Nowadays, most cameras are 3 megapixels and over. Our smallest canvas frame will require an image of at least 2 megapixels, whereas our largest sizes require 5 megapixels or more. There is no problem using an image with more megapixels than the minimum required – in fact this is better. We suggest you try to always take your images in a high as resolution as possible for canvas use.

Q8. How do I upload an image?

Once you've registered as a Canvas Art customer, you can start uploading your images.

Click on the My Images link at the top of the page to go to your own image gallery, where you can upload new images or review the images you're already uploaded to us.

Why must I register to upload images?

By only allowing registered users to upload photos, we can ensure that any images uploaded to us do not get stolen, misused or put on Google. It's basically to ensure the security and privacy of photographs.

Q9. How can I order online?

It’s a very simple process. Firstly you select or upload your image, then your preferred canvas size and orientation. Next you select the area to print. When you have added all the canvases you want to your shopping cart, you are ready to check out. Finally you provide delivery and payment information. Canvas prints take 10-15 business days, depending on delivery location, and are delivered by courier.

Q10. How do I find out the status of my order?

When your order is shipped, you will be emailed a Consignment Note number which can be used to track your order on the courier company's website.

Q11. How can I hang my Canvas Print?

Our canvas prints are lightweight and come supplied with hanging eyelets and string. They do not require much support and generally hardware-store hooks will do the trick. If in doubt, ask a home-handyman.
